Naughty Dog is working on not one but two new The Last of Us games, studio creative director Neil Druckmann confirmed on Last of Us Day (September 28). Both titles are in very early development and will expand the franchise's canon beyond Parts I and II — Druckmann described them as meaningful stories, not spin-offs. Separately, the studio's sci-fi action game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet won't get another update until a dedicated reveal in 2027.

Two games, zero details

Druckmann's announcement, made via the Naughty Dog blog, gives fans very little to work with beyond the confirmation itself. No release windows, no platforms beyond the obvious PlayStation assumption, and no narrative specifics. His case for continuing the franchise: if the team didn't have genuinely compelling ideas, The Last of Us would have ended on a high note. Per Push Square, both projects are at a very early stage, with some speculation they could target PS6 rather than PS5.

The pivot back to single-player storytelling makes sense given what happened with The Last of Us Online. That multiplayer project was cancelled in December 2023 — just 24 hours before it was due to be presented internally — despite being roughly 80% complete, as Bloomberg reported. The decision freed up resources for both Intergalactic and now, apparently, two new Last of Us entries. It fits Sony's wider retreat from live-service games after a string of expensive failures across its first-party studios.

Intergalactic: a 2027 problem

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet was announced at The Game Awards in December 2024 and has been quiet since. Druckmann confirmed the next proper update won't arrive until 2027, with a dedicated showcase planned. The game is described as Naughty Dog's most ambitious project — a sci-fi action-adventure with an original soundtrack from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails. That 2027 reveal window also suggests any actual release is likely 2027 at the earliest, potentially later, putting it in direct competition with other major PlayStation first-party titles like God of War: Laufey.

For now, the studio is juggling three major projects simultaneously. Whether the two new Last of Us games are direct sequels, prequels, or something structurally different remains entirely open — and Druckmann isn't saying.
