Sony is surveying developers after disc backlash — the 2028 cutoff may not be final

Sony may be walking back its plan to kill physical game discs by January 2028. Just months after the July 2026 announcement, the company sent developers what insiders are calling one of the largest surveys it has ever distributed — a move that signals the all-digital strategy is facing real internal pressure. For PS5 owners with a disc drive, that's worth paying attention to.

The survey

Insider channel Moore's Law Is Dead reported that Sony is polling developers and publishers about the disc phase-out — and the survey is described as bigger than almost anything the company has sent before, per Notebookcheck. The timing tracks with growing frustration in the industry. At Gamescom 2026, smaller publishers openly voiced concerns, with some weighing a shift toward Nintendo Switch 2 titles rather than accepting a disc-free PlayStation future. A "Don't Kill the Disc" petition collected 120,000 signatures in just four days after Sony's original announcement.

The consumer case is straightforward: no disc means no used game market and no physical ownership. That debate is picking up momentum in consumer protection circles on both sides of the Atlantic.

Wolverine does the math

The numbers backing disc skeptics are hard to dismiss. Marvel's Wolverine sold roughly 1.9 million copies in its first three days — and 22.9% of revenue came from physical disc sales, according to WCCFtech. For a platform supposedly dominated by digital downloads, that's a meaningful slice. Estimates put the share of PS5 owners in the US with a disc-drive console at around 73%, and Wolverine's launch suggests those drives are still very much in use.

Sony has already begun converting its Austrian disc plant to produce optical microlenses — a physical signal that the company is serious about winding down disc manufacturing. But a factory retooling isn't a final policy, and surveys don't get sent unless leadership is reconsidering something.

The competition angle

Microsoft is moving in the opposite direction. Rather than eliminating discs outright, TechPowerUp reports that Microsoft is exploring a "disc-to-digital" program for next-gen Xbox — letting players convert physical copies into digital licenses. It's a compromise Sony has not publicly entertained, but the developer survey suggests the conversation is at least happening internally.

Sony's official PlayStation Blog post framed the decision as reflecting consumer preference leaning "decisively" toward digital. Wolverine's opening weekend complicates that framing. Whether Sony adjusts the 2028 deadline, introduces a hybrid program, or holds the line remains to be seen — but a survey this large rarely leads nowhere.
