Huawei's Mate 90 Pro Max gets a clip-on 1-inch camera module with 10x optical zoom
Huawei's Mate 90 Pro Max Collector's Edition, due September 29, ships with a detachable camera module that carries its own 1-inch sensor — the kind of hardware usually found in dedicated compact cameras. The accessory, called the Ruiying Z10, covers a 24–240mm equivalent focal range with 10x optical zoom, per Gizmochina citing Weibo leakers. Neither the phone nor the module has confirmed availability in the US or UK.
The module
The Ruiying Z10 is not a simple lens cap. It has its own independent optical system: a Red Maple lens array, a motorized Power Zoom (PZ) mechanism, and a variable aperture spanning f/2.0 to f/4.5. Physical focal length runs 9.1–91mm, giving that 24–240mm equivalent range. The approach echoes Sony's old QX-series clip-on cameras and more recent Xiaomi camera accessories — hardware that adds bulk in exchange for genuine imaging headroom that software can't replicate.
The concept is a direct answer to physics. Fitting a large sensor inside a slim body means optical compromises; attaching it externally sidesteps that entirely.
The phone itself
Even without the module, the Mate 90 Pro Max is a serious spec sheet. The camera array includes a 200MP periscope unit on a 1/1.28-inch sensor and a 50MP main camera with variable aperture. The display is a 6.9-inch dual-layer tandem OLED running at 1–144Hz with 1.5K resolution. Battery capacity is 6,800 mAh with 100W wired charging.
The chip inside is Huawei's Kirin 9050 Pro, built on a LogicFolding 3D stacking architecture the company says achieves a 55% transistor density gain over its predecessor — reaching 238 MTr/mm². Those figures are Huawei-sourced; no independent auditor has verified them. Huawei's motivation is clear. The Mate 80 series sold close to 9 million units in China in Q1 2026 alone, and the Mate 90 line is designed to build on that momentum — including with collector-tier hardware like the Ruiying Z10. The separately launched Mate XT 2 foldable bets on form factor; the Mate 90 bets on raw camera capability.
Not coming to you
Huawei exited most Western European markets in late 2024 after losing CE certification pathways, and no official US channel exists for any Mate-series device. The Mate 90 Pro Max Collector's Edition is a China-exclusive launch. Grey-market imports would arrive without warranty, without OTA software updates, and without any guarantee the Ruiying Z10 module meets FCC or CE radio equipment standards. For anyone outside China, this is a window into where Huawei's hardware ambitions are headed — not a purchase decision.
