RTX 5090 laptop GPU hits 250W after shunt mod — and gains 41% in benchmarks
A hardware enthusiast has pushed the RTX 5090 laptop GPU from its factory 175W limit to a sustained 250W, producing benchmark gains of up to 41.6% — performance headroom that NVIDIA and laptop makers are currently leaving locked. The mod was tested by YouTube channel GizmoSlipTech on an XMG Neo 16 (2025), and the numbers are striking enough that at least one major laptop maker has taken notice.
The power cap explained
NVIDIA sets the RTX 5090 laptop GPU at a maximum of 175W — 150W base TGP plus 25W Dynamic Boost, according to Notebookcheck. That ceiling isn't arbitrary: laptop power delivery systems, voltage regulators, and chassis cooling are all engineered around that figure. The chip itself, however, is the same GB203 silicon used in the RTX 5080 desktop card, which runs at 325W. That gap is where this mod lives.
The modification is a shunt mod — it replaces a small resistor on the GPU board to trick the power-limit circuitry into allowing more current. The version tested here was built by an enthusiast called PREMO using AI-assisted coding (described as "vibe-coding"). The mod has not been publicly released, so there's no download link and no instructions. For now, this is a proof of concept, not a how-to.
The numbers
At 250W, the RTX 5090 laptop GPU scored 41.6% higher in 3DMark Steel Nomad compared to the stock 175W setting, reports Tom's Hardware. That kind of leap typically only appears between GPU generations, not within the same chip. In games, the gains are more modest but still significant: Cyberpunk 2077 with ultra ray tracing improved by 23.9%, Black Myth: Wukong climbed 23.3%, and The Witcher 3 jumped nearly 30%.
There's a catch. Keeping 250W of heat under control required the external XMG Oasis liquid-cooling system connected to the Neo 16. Without that, thermals would have shut the experiment down — or worse, killed the board. At stock 175W, the Oasis keeps the GPU below 70°C; at 250W, that cooling headroom is critical.
What this means in practice
For the vast majority of RTX 5090 laptop owners, this mod is not an option. It requires soldering skills, electronics knowledge, and hardware that isn't publicly available. It also voids the warranty — no repair shop or OEM will touch a shunt-modded board.
XMG has publicly stated it would be interested in supporting higher TGP limits officially, if NVIDIA approves. That's a meaningful signal: the hardware can clearly handle more power with the right cooling, and at least one vendor wants to go there. Whether NVIDIA opens the door is a different question entirely. Until it does, 41% of performance is sitting behind a policy decision, not a technical one.
