Google's Gemini can now make phone calls on your behalf
Google has given Gemini the ability to make phone calls on your behalf, rolling out a new feature called Call For Me to Pixel 11 owners in the US who hold a paid Gemini subscription. The feature is currently in early preview through the Phone by Google Public Beta program. No launch date has been set for any other country.
How it works
You trigger Call For Me using the `@Call For Me` tag or a voice prompt, then describe what outcome you want — a table booked, an appointment rescheduled, a product's availability confirmed. Gemini checks it understands the task, asks for confirmation, then places the call itself.
At the start of every call, Gemini identifies itself as an AI assistant calling on the user's behalf — a transparency step that aligns with requirements under the EU AI Act and mirrors scrutiny the FTC has signalled toward autonomous AI systems, per Inside AI. You can listen to the call live through a real-time transcript and jump in to take over at any point. When it's done, Gemini delivers a summary and full call transcript.
Google is keeping the scope deliberately narrow. The feature suits routine, low-stakes tasks: restaurant reservations, hold requests, stock checks. The company explicitly advises against using it for anything important.
The limits
Fraud protections are built in. Daily usage caps apply, and anyone who doesn't want Gemini calling their number can submit a blocking request through a form on Android's website. The specifics of how that form works operationally haven't been detailed publicly.
The Pixel 11 exclusivity and beta app requirement keep the test group small — almost certainly intentional given the regulatory environment. Meta's rival agentic tools (Muse and Instinct) are already capable of placing calls, as TechCrunch notes, making Google's cautious rollout look more like a data-gathering exercise than a competitive sprint.
Outside the US
There's no timeline for the UK, EU, or any other market. Google's Gemini expansion has been moving steadily into new hardware, but Call For Me stays US-only for now. The company has said it plans to bring the feature to more countries eventually — without specifying when or which ones first.
