Blizzard has officially announced Diablo V, targeting a Spring 2029 release — and its premise breaks the franchise's three-decade tradition of humanity scraping through. Set a century after Diablo IV, this is a world where Diablo won. Sanctuary has fallen, and the first concept art makes that very clear.

The reveal came during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, where Blizzard dropped a teaser alongside several other major announcements. No gameplay was shown, but the studio released early concept images shortly after the event.

The look

The art depicts sweeping panoramas of a shattered Sanctuary — ruined cities, collapsed gothic cathedrals, a world that has been thoroughly broken. Blizzard appears to be pulling the visual style back toward Diablo II's darker, grimier palette and away from the comparatively warmer tones of Diablo IV. Think less painterly hellscape, more medieval ruin.

Three classes, one newcomer

Three starting classes are confirmed: the Demon Hunter and Monk return from earlier entries, while the Plague Knight is an entirely new archetype. The absence of the Sorceress and Barbarian — franchise staples — either signals a significant mechanical rethink or a staggered class reveal ahead of launch.

The franchise behind it

Blizzard noted that the Diablo series has now reached 130 million players across four mainline titles over 30 years, per Variety. That's the commercial weight Diablo V is expected to carry. Diablo IV remains the fastest-selling Blizzard game ever, pulling in $666 million in its first five days in 2023.

While V bakes, Blizzard is keeping the franchise active: an Amazon-themed class pack arrives in Diablo IV in 2027, and the game is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 15. A Netflix animated Diablo series is also in development, though no studio, director, or release window has been announced.

What's missing

Platforms haven't been confirmed — PC is the safe assumption, but nothing is official. The Spring 2029 window gives Blizzard roughly two and a half years of runway, which is either a sign of confidence in the scope of the game or a very early reveal. Given how little was shown at BlizzCon, it's probably some of both.
