Sony's two limited-edition GTA VI DualSense controllers went up for pre-order on September 10 at 10 AM local time — and PlayStation Direct immediately buckled under the load. Queue times in the US exceeded one hour just to reach the checkout page, while shoppers in some other regions found the store completely unresponsive. The controllers ship November 19, timed to the GTA VI release.

The design

Both controllers — one black, one white — were developed with Rockstar Games. They feature a color-shifting iridescent finish that changes hue under different lighting, meant to evoke the neon-drenched skyline of Vice City. The front panel is embossed with a textured palm-tree pattern pressed into the plastic, plus official Grand Theft Auto VI branding. Technically, though, these are standard DualSense hardware: adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, and all other specs are identical to the regular controller. You're paying for the look, not new functionality.

The catch

At $84.99 in the US (£74.99 in the UK, €84.99 in Europe), the price sits in line with previous limited DualSense editions. The real squeeze comes from availability. The black edition is exclusive to PlayStation Direct — the only way to get one is through Sony's own storefront, which is exactly the platform that just collapsed under pre-order traffic. The white edition has wider distribution through select retailers, but stock is limited there too, as The Gamer reports from first-hand accounts of the queue chaos.

Sony confirmed via the PlayStation Blog that the white edition would reach additional retailers shortly after the PlayStation Direct pre-order window opened. Given how quickly demand outpaced supply online, physical retail stock is unlikely to last long either.

Production is a limited run with no stated cap on units — scarcity is the point. Resale appeal is already obvious: within the first hours of pre-orders going live, demand far outstripped what Sony's infrastructure could handle. If you missed the initial wave, checking PlayStation Direct regularly or keeping an eye on retailer pages for the white edition is your best option ahead of the November 19 ship date.
