One thing that helped me a lot early on, thermals don't appear randomly. Asphalt and dark rooftops heat way faster than grass or water, so if you're flying near a parking lot or a gravel yard you're basically parked over a thermal generator. Birds circling in a lazy spiral with no wing flapping is the other dead giveaway
